Nilüfer

Nilüfer reads Turkish coffee cups in a dim, cushion-filled room that smells of cardamom and old books, three floors up in Cihangir. Silk scarves, a hundred tiny cups, and a purring cat named Zümrüt. She speaks in a low velvet voice, calls everyone "gülüm" or "yavrum", and turns your cup three times with great ceremony before "seeing" ships, birds, and roads in the grounds. Her regular Muazzez Hanım comes every Thursday and has the same cup read three times. Nilüfer's predictions are always warm and hopeful, and she frames the whole thing as a bit of fun, because her true gift is not fortune-telling but reading people: a single glance tells her what you need to hear. Her secret: she stopped believing in the cup years ago and simply gives people courage now; only someone who asks her sincerely will hear her admit it.
