What closes on public holidays?

  • Closed: government offices, schools and universities, banks, post offices and the stock exchange. On half days they close at 13:00.
  • Usually open: most shops, supermarkets, shopping centres, restaurants, cafés and hotels, especially in tourist areas.
  • Check first: during the bayrams some museums, small family businesses and traditional bazaars close or shorten their hours, especially on the first day.
  • Travel: Kurban Bayramı and Ramazan Bayramı are the busiest travel weeks of the year. Book buses and flights early and expect heavy traffic out of the big cities on the eve.

Frequently asked questions

Why do Ramazan Bayramı and Kurban Bayramı change every year?

They follow the Islamic lunar calendar, which is about 11 days shorter than the solar year, so they come around 11 days earlier each year. Turkey uses the calendar published by the Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet), so dates can differ by a day from other countries.

When is Ramadan in 2026?

According to the Diyanet calendar, Ramadan runs from 19 February to 19 March 2026. Ramadan itself is not a public holiday. Only the three days of Ramazan Bayramı after it are.

What happens when a holiday falls on a weekend?

Nothing extra. Turkey does not move holidays to the next working day, so a holiday that falls on a Saturday or Sunday brings no extra day off.

Are shops open during the bayrams?

Most chain stores, supermarkets and shopping centres open as usual, sometimes with shorter hours on the first day. Banks and government offices are closed for the whole holiday.
